Camp upbeat
For the Performer & World-Changer
At Camp UpBeat, campers ages 11–14 spend two unforgettable weeks, from July 5–July 18, 2026, learning, performing, and connecting through music, dance, and service. Each day blends creativity and leadership with the classic Camp Horizons experience—campfires, laughter, and lifelong friendships.
UpBeat Campers spend their days diving into music, dance, leadership, and cultural learning, and still join the larger Camp Horizons community for meals, evening programs, and cabin life. It’s the best of both worlds: focus on what you love during the day, then enjoy all the campfires, friendships, and fun that Camp Horizons is known for at night.

Upbeat camp FAQ
Is this the same as Camp Up with People?
Camp Up with People (CUWP) is the heart and inspiration behind this new program. Camp UpBeat carries forward the same “music with a mission” spirit and core ideals of connection, creativity, and community but is updated to work with as a self-sustainable model. Instead of operating as a stand-alone camp, Camp UpBeat is now part of the Camp Horizons family, blending the energy and purpose of CUWP with all the fun, friendship, and traditions that make Camp Horizons so special.
Why is the price higher than Camp Horizons?
As a specialty camp, Camp UpBeat requires additional resources. We bring in staff with specialized skills in dance, vocals, and the performing arts, and we also include some off-site trips that need extra support. These added elements make the program truly unique.
Who will the instructors be?
We’re still in the hiring process, but all instructors will come with performing arts experience and training. They’ll bring the energy, talent, and know-how to make UpBeat unforgettable. Want to join the team? Fill out our staff application form!
Is Walter involved?
Yes! We’re thrilled that Walter is part of the planning process and will be directly involved in the program. Walter has been a beloved director of Camp Up with People in the past and brings a wealth of experience and passion to the team. (We do not have the space here to list all of the amazing qualifications Walter brings to this program, but we are grateful to have him as part of our team!)
I’m an UWP alumni—should I send my kids here or to the Legacy Program?
Both programs are special and complement one another. The teams are collaborating, and we’d encourage families to be part of both if possible. If you have to choose one, the Legacy Program honors the tradition of alumni experiences while at a day camp during the reunion, while Camp UpBeat introduces those same values—music, service, and cultural connection—to a new generation in a modern, camp-style setting.
Wait… What is Up with People?
If you’re new to Up with People (UWP), here’s the scoop:
Founded in the 1960s, UWP used music and service to connect young people and cultures across the globe. Cast members toured internationally, staying with host families, volunteering in communities, and performing on stages big and small—including four Super Bowl halftime shows.
Today, Up with People no longer tours. Instead, it has entered a new chapter as a philanthropic organization that supports programs like Camp UpBeat, helping carry its ideals into the future.
At its heart, UWP is still about youth leadership, cross-cultural understanding, and making a difference through the performing arts—and Camp UpBeat brings that spirit to life in a way that fits today’s world.
Why did you change the ages?
Originally, CUWP was designed as a stepping stone for teens, while UWP Jr. was a day camp for younger kids. After looking closely at the program, we realized the best fit is campers ages 11–14—a key time when kids are curious, confident, and ready to grow. We may expand the age range in the future.
Why only one session?
We want to launch Camp UpBeat in a way that ensures quality and sustainability. Starting with one session helps us focus on delivering the best possible experience. If interest is strong, we’ll explore adding more sessions in the future.
Why did you change the name?
We love Up with People, but it doesn’t have the same recognition it once did. We wanted something that nods to CUWP’s history while feeling fresh, fun, and welcoming to today’s campers. Camp UpBeat conveys energy, music, and camp vibes, making it perfect for this new chapter.
Are there scholarships?
We’re working with the Up with People Foundation and UWP International Alumni Association to develop scholarships that will make Camp UpBeat accessible to more families.
Do Horizons discounts apply?
Yes! Families can take advantage of the same discounts listed on our Rates & Dates page.
Why Camp UpBeat at Horizons?
Camp Horizons’ founder, John Hall, is a UWP alumnus, and many Camp Horizons staff are too. UWP spirit is woven into Horizons—even our nightly song “We Are Many, We Are One” comes from UWP.
Since 2011, Horizons has hosted CUWP and UWP Jr., welcoming 700+ campers from 28 countries, 600 UWP Jr. participants, and many casts, and the Changemaker program in 2021.
With Horizons’ established campus and resources, Camp UpBeat is designed for long-term success, inspiring youth year after year.

Will I still get to do “regular” camp stuff?
Yes! Even though you’ll spend your days singing, dancing, and rehearsing, you’ll still get campfires, evening games, swimming, and all the fun traditions of Camp Horizons.
Do I need to already be good at singing or dancing?
Nope! Camp UpBeat is about trying new things, building confidence, and having fun. Whether you’ve been in musicals before or just love to sing in the shower, you’ll fit right in and have a great time. There is always a place for everyone on the stage no matter their experience!
What’s the final performance like?
It’s awesome! At the end of camp, you and your new friends will put on a big show for the whole Horizons community. Everyone cheers, claps, and even sings along. It’s one of the best parts of camp.
Will I make friends outside of Camp UpBeat?
Definitely! You’ll live in cabins with other Camp Horizons campers and share meals, free time, and evening programs with everyone. You’ll make friends in Camp UpBeat and across camp.
What if I feel nervous about being on stage?
That’s totally normal! The counselors are great at helping everyone feel comfortable. Plus, you’ll be practicing and laughing with your group the whole time. By the end, most campers are excited to be part of the performance—even if they were nervous at first.
What makes Camp UpBeat different from other camps?
At Camp UpBeat, you’re not just learning songs and dances—you’re connecting with people, making a difference through service, and discovering your voice and doing critical thinking about the world around you. It’s camp fun with an extra beat.
